I’ve been writing poems for a long while and I’ve majored in Literature- so I know some of the greats. Poetry is the way literature began and although it has had its ups and downs( Who hasn’t? Even the economy shakes up every once in a while), it is a great medium to understand the world around you.

I’ve taught English and seen poetry boredom strike young minds. No matter what people say about poems,I believe that good literature is simply an extension of the poetic mind.

So I’m a heart poet and on this blog I share my journey toward understanding poetry.

Incidentally I’ve just written an ebook. It’s a paranormal romance that I’ll be inflicting you with in future posts.

A heart poet and teacher is a good thing, because poetry is more than words. It is a direct link to feelings . . . emotion. Maybe a poem’s rhythm matches the rhythm of the heart, synchronizes with it, because poetry isn’t heard, it’s felt. God knows, students are awash with emotions. The link is only natural.

Great blog! Not enough people write poetry anymore, so I’m appreciative of this blog. I also was an English major and took poetry classes, but it’s been a while since I’ve written any poetry. I did, however, recently start songwriting and that has been an interesting adventure. Obviously, there are some parallels with poetry writing, but in songwriting, you also have to take into account how a word sounds with a particular chord or how it sounds sung versus being spoken. Look forward to reading more!

Thank you so much Jacqueline….there is so much in common between song writing and poetry….it’s all about finding the rhythm. Glad you stopped by!

I am honored that you would take note of my new website–many thanks to you. English teachers are a wonderful breed–I am ever indebted to the late E.B. Page. He was old-school & extraordinary–I miss him each time I post my work, for it was he who caught the brilliance first & closed my hand around it tightly.

So, Neel–send your words & students forth with the same torch!

Hi there, and thanks for liking my post! I’m following your blog. I too am an English teacher and actually just finished a poetry series in one of my classes. What kinds of classes do you teach?

Nice to meet you Erin…..I teach regular English, a bit of grammar, some phonetics, essays, poetry……right now, however, my focus is on writing. Thanks for stopping by!

My degrees were in Psychology, a powerful vehicle for the poetry I have been writing for years but must admit to wishing I had come up with that last line. Too often, I have witnessed those whose bridge appeared to have only one side. I look forward to more.

We poets can stick together. Reading your blog drug me out of the closet again. Unfortunately, I had only written prose for some time. Thanks for dragging that poem out of me yesterday.

    Hi Neel!

Thanks so much for following me; what a wonderful 2012 gift! Happy New Year and I hope you continue to enjoy…and I hope you know, now that I just realized you teach English, I am not an expert, nor trained in writing. I simply write from my heart, so go easy on me! 🙂
